Philosophy of language, semantics, pragmatics

I am an assistant professor in philosophy at NYU, before which I was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. Before that, I received a PhD in philosophy at MIT. I work on philosophy of language and its intersections with neighboring fields. I am interested in the broad question: what does it mean to say that someone is able to do something? During my time at the centre I will be working on a project that explores this question from the angle of probability judgments. We can naturally form probability judgments about ascriptions of abilities, like ’The chance that Susie will be able to make this basket is one in ten’. What do these judgments tell us about the meaning of ability ascriptions (and hence abilities)?
