Philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, developmental psychology, self-consciousness, social cognition

I am Professor of Cognitive Anthropology in the Department of Philosophy at Leipzig University. My research is located at the intersection between philosophy of mind and cognitive science. In particular, I am interested in self-consciousness, social cognition, the distinction between different forms of knowledge (of ourselves, others, and our relation to the world) and different forms of representation, the nature and origins of normativity, and the relation between personal and subpersonal level explanations. Part of my research consists in exploring what a developmental perspective on these and related topics can reveal. My research is guided by the belief that there can be mutually beneficial relations between philosophy and empirical research. More generally speaking, I am interested in how we develop both epistemic and practical agency, and how this development is shaped by our interaction with others. During my time at Human Abilities I will focus in particular on gaining a better understanding of how our perception of affordances is shaped by our social environment.
